Statesville leaders vote to support I-77 South project to avoid repaying over $1M to NCDOT

STATESVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Statesville leaders are joining several municipalities outside of Mecklenburg County to renew their support for the I-77 South toll lanes project.

The Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization has just a few weeks left before they have to decide whether to support expanding I-77 or repay millions to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Under the provision included in the state budget, municipalities that don’t move forward with the project could be required to repay the state, and NCDOT could also withhold funding for road resurfacing and future transportation projects…
