State asked to criminally investigate ‘alleged financial irregularities’ within Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – The district attorney for Mecklenburg County on Friday asked the state to investigate “alleged financial irregularities” at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

District Attorney Spencer Merriweather III on Friday, Sept. 18, issued a letter to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, requesting a formal criminal investigation into the school district.

Specifically, Merriweather is asking state investigators to look into “alleged financial irregularities within transactions involving Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS), beginning in fiscal year 2026 and into fiscal year 2027.”…
