North Carolina men faced revoked citizenship over fraud

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The United States Attorney’s Office is seeking to revoke U.S. citizenship for three men accused of committing naturalization fraud, and a fourth is facing the same charge while serving time for child sex crimes, according to Russ Ferguson, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.

Crimes against children reportedly hidden on application

A federal grand jury in Charlotte has criminally indicted 42-year-old Sha Bahadur Ghaley for naturalization fraud. He is a naturalized citizen from Bhutan.

The indictment alleges that between 2010 and 2014, Ghaley committed sexual crimes against a child in Charlotte. As a result, he later pleaded guilty in 2024 to three counts of Taking Indecent Liberties with a Child.

However, before Ghaley’s arrest for these crimes, he applied for and obtained U.S. citizenship.

In December 2017, Ghaley applied for naturalization with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS). Officials say Ghaley lied on the application by stating he had not committed any crimes. This included saying “No” to questions like “Were you ever involved in any way with … [f]orcing, or trying to force someone to have any kind of sexual contact or relations?” and “Have you ever committed, assisted in committing, or attempted to commit, a crime or offense for which you were not arrested?” Ghaley signed this application under penalty of perjury…
