RALEIGH, N.C. — Thirty-seven years ago, Hurricane Hugo made landfall in South Carolina as a Category 4 storm before racing into North Carolina and leaving a lasting mark far from the coast.
According to the National Weather Service, Hugo made landfall near Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, around midnight on Sept. 22, 1989.
