Feast or Famine Rain Drops Over 5 Inches Near Great Falls and Nearly 3 Inches in Mooresville and Lake Wylie, While Charlotte, Matthews and Monroe Barely Get a Quarter Inch

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA — It has truly been feast or famine for rainfall across the Charlotte region over the past 24 hours. Some neighborhoods got a deluge, while others barely saw a quarter inch. Storm total estimates through 8:57 AM Sunday, October 4 show 5.60 inches near Great Falls, South Carolina, 2.88 inches near Mooresville and 2.84 inches near the Lake Wylie and Clover area. Meanwhile, much of Charlotte came in around 0.20 inch, and spots near Matthews, Indian Trail and Monroe saw almost nothing at all.

Great Falls Gets Hammered

The biggest total in the region showed up near Great Falls in Chester County, South Carolina, where radar estimated about 5.60 inches of rain. A band of heavy rain stretched east from there toward Lancaster and Kershaw, with another pocket near Cheraw estimated at about 2.56 inches.

These areas sat right under slow-moving storms that dropped heavy rain over the same spots for hours.

Mooresville and Lake Wylie See Nearly 3 Inches

North of Charlotte, Mooresville picked up an estimated 2.88 inches, one of the highest totals in North Carolina. To the southwest, the Lake Wylie and Clover area came in around 2.84 inches, with one gauge near Lake Wylie recording about 2.73 inches.

Gaston County and Rock Hill Get Over an Inch

West of Charlotte, rain totals were solid but more moderate. Gastonia came in around 1.36 inches, with gauges south of the city recording about 1.69 to 1.70 inches. Another gauge near the Kings Mountain and Clover area measured about 1.60 inches, while Cherryville saw about 1.13 inches.

In York County, Rock Hill picked up about 1.32 inches. Farther northwest, Morganton recorded around 1.48 inches, and a gauge near Catawba County reported about 2.21 inches.

Charlotte Mostly Misses Out

For much of Mecklenburg County, the rain was a letdown. Radar estimated only about 0.20 inch in central Charlotte, while rain gauges across the city mostly recorded 0.3 to 0.6 inch…
