Mecklenburg County commissioners expressed concerns about Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools as the district faces federal and state investigations. But most want to see those investigations play out before making moves themselves.
The State Bureau of Investigation, State Auditor’s Office, State Department of Public Instruction, FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office have all confirmed they’re probing CMS in recent weeks.
The district is experiencing a major turnover in leadership, including the firing of Superintendent Crystal Hill after she raised concerns about finances and board decisions. A series of top executives are departing voluntarily, too. In an email sent by Hill the night of her firing, the now-former superintendent alerted County Manager Mike Bryant that “the funding source for the transactions I’ve questioned are local funds allocated from Mecklenburg County Board of County Commissioners.”…
