In a heartfelt and multipronged commemoration, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) has launched a series of events and projects to mark the one-year anniversary of the tragic deaths of four law enforcement officers. On April 29, 2024, CMPD Officer Joshua Eyer, Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Weeks, and N.C. Department of Adult Correction Investigators William Elliott and Samuel Poloche were killed in the line of duty. CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings noted, “No singular act can fully honor such profound loss,” in a statement obtained by the CMPD Newsroom.
A centerpiece of the CMPD’s tributes is a feature documentary titled “One Year Later: Remembering the Fallen,” which explores the impact of the officers’ deaths through interviews and personal accounts. The 29 candid interviews, including one with Ashley Eyer, the widow of Officer Joshua Eyer, sheds light on the depths of grief and resilience over the past year. CMPD’s Public Affairs Division produced the documentary, viewable on CMPD’s YouTube channel, with editorial input to ensure thoughtfulness throughout the production process.
Complementing the commemorative documentary, CMPD is backing the Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s annual Charlotte Climb. Taking place at Bank of America Stadium, the event offers the community a way to remember the fallen officers publicly. Slated for today at 9 a.m., the occasion will feature remarks from notable community leaders and the families of the lost officers. Proceeds from the climb will aid Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s programs that support the loved ones of first responders who have given their lives in service…
