SBI investigates inmate death at Mecklenburg County jail

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man died in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office after he was found unresponsive in his cell.

Juan Utuy-Sarat, 41, was an inmate at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center. He was found unresponsive in his cell on Saturday, April 25, the sheriff’s office says. A medical emergency was declared and Charlotte Fire and Medic showed up a few minutes later to take him to the hospital.
