Mecklenburg County inmate dies one week after medical emergency

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — An inmate at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center has died after suffering a medical emergency, according to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Just before 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, detention officers responded to a medical emergency that was assigned to 41-year-old Juan Utuy-Sarat. Officials said he was found unresponsive and was transported to a local hospital.

Despite lifesaving efforts, Utuy-Sarat died around 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, May 2.

“First and foremost, I’d like to offer my condolences to the family of Mr. Utuy-Sarat,” said Sheriff McFadden. “Any time someone passes away in our custody, it weighs heavily on all of us. We recognize the responsibility we have to every individual entrusted to our care, and I want the community to know that we remain committed to providing safe, secure and humane conditions inside our facility. The well-being of those in our custody is a responsibility we take seriously every day, and we will continue working to uphold that standard with compassion, professionalism and accountability.”…
