Deadly Late-Night Crash Claims Charlotte Biker In University City

A 32-year-old Charlotte man, Aaron Linwood McIntosh, was killed in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash on University City Boulevard near North Tryon Street early last Wednesday, adding another tragic case to the city’s already tense traffic-safety debate. Emergency crews arrived to find a heavily damaged Harley-Davidson and McIntosh lying unresponsive in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and police say no other vehicles were involved as investigators work to reconstruct what went wrong.

Officers were called out just before 1:30 a.m. and found the wreck near the busy intersection. The rider was identified as 32-year-old Aaron Linwood McIntosh, who did not survive the collision, according to WBTV.

What police say

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say they believe speed played a role in the single-vehicle crash, according to WCCB. Investigators collected blood and urine samples from the rider, and toxicology results are still pending, as reported by Queen City News.

Where this fits into Charlotte’s safety debate

The deadly wreck unfolded at an intersection that city transportation staff recently flagged for a potential red-light camera pilot meant to cut down on serious crashes. That proposal, and growing concern over rising traffic deaths, comes as Charlotte leaders juggle enforcement crackdowns and street design changes in the fight to rein in high-speed wrecks, according to The Charlotte Observer.
