Invasive flower in bloom across Central Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – An invasive plant with yellow flowers is in bloom across Central Virginia.

“The impact here is that it really does form these very dense mats of leaves and flowers — it makes it very difficult for other species to penetrate,” said Steven Gaines, urban forester for the City of Charlottesville. “There’s just not a whole lot of successful pollination occurring because of this.”

Gaines said the low-lying plant, Ficaria verna is an invasive herbaceous perennial, forming in dense mats along areas prone to flooding…
