Charlottesville Low-Income Housing Coalition holds rally, calls on city council for change

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – A group of community members gathered outside of City Hall on Monday night, March 30, calling on CharlottesvilleCity Council to take action against two multistory housing developments geared primarily towards University of Virginia students.

The protest, filled with signs including “Stop Displacement of Black Residents,” and “Protect Core Black Neighborhoods,” is the most recent demonstration of the concern that housing tailored towards University of Virginia students will negatively impact and even displace people who live in predominantly low-income and historically Black neighborhoods in Charlottesville.

While the Charlottesville Low-Income Housing Coalition hosted the rally, it was joined by the Legal Aid Justice Center, and Charlottesville’s Public Housing Association of Residents, many of whom have been consistently attending Council meetings to oppose the developments, despite those items not being on the agenda…
