Norfolk senior with heart disease learns relocation to public housing is delayed

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Ms. Doreen White was all smiles when she told 10 On Your Side earlier this month that Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority officials have plans to relocate her to the Grandy Village community, where some homes have been renovated.

Over the past few weeks, while investigating complaints of open sewage and other issues in Young Terrace, 10 On Your Side interviewed 68-year-old White, who was sitting outside on a small platform on her second-story unit in the 1950s-era neighborhood.

‘Don’t nobody care’: Woman in public housing cries out for help

White, who has heart disease, explained that she is essentially trapped on the second floor of her Young Terrace home. With help from gravity, she can slowly walk down the stairs, but because of the strain on her heart, the trip upstairs, at times, is more than she can handle.

Officials from the NRHA heard her cries for help and planned to relocate White to Grandy Village, a few miles away, where some units have been renovated.

Two weeks later, the relocation is delayed.

“Well, I talked to Ms. Allen, and she told me that they did a first inspection [but a second inspection] they haven’t done yet,” said White.
