Attorney has advice for homebuyers to avoid surprises before it’s too late

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Local real estate attorney John McCormicksaid the law doesn’t favor homebuyers who later get an unwelcomed surprise similar to the one Donna Jones got when she bought a home in Hampton and, soon after, began getting unwanted visits from a man with mental illness who used to live at her address.

“Unfortunately for buyers, the law is stacked against you,” he said, as we discussed Tuesday morning how people can avoid unwanted surprises after they’ve closed on a new home.

The follow-up came after Monday’s 10 On Your Side investigation “Unwanted Visitor.” It illustrated the dilemma facing Jones, who purchased a home last fall in Hampton. She began getting unwanted visits from Darius Mitchell, the man who formerly lived at the address with his mother. He has mental illness and a history of violence against family members, and he has made several recent visits to the house late at night, scaring and angering Jones…
