CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – Crews with the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are engaged in the demolition phase of the Deep Creek Bridge Replacement Project on Route 17 in Chesapeake. A July 16 social media post shows crews removing debris from the old structure as the work area is prepared for the next steps in the project.
The Deep Creek Bridge, built in 1934, is a two-lane drawbridge that passes over the Dismal Swamp Canal where U.S. Route 17 crosses at Deep Creek. The bridge is functionally obsolete due to its narrow roadway and poor alignment with connecting roads, compounded by increasing traffic volumes.
Earlier this month, crews shifted the westbound traffic onto the new completed bridge span.
