PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A nearly 100-year-old trumpet that was a priceless family heirloom was stolen from a Portsmouth home following a fire last week.
The victims are now trying to recover the item, which wasn’t the only thing taken from the home after the fire.
“We had a house fire on Monday, July 20,” Daniece Jenkins said. “It’s about 6 or 7 a.m., and we call the fire department. They came out and they found the fire in the attic — some exposed wire caught the insulation on fire. So they flooded everything with water. Got the fire out, but they tore down the ceiling in the kitchen and in the dining room, and everything was just wet.”
In the home’s present condition, they couldn’t stay there. They grabbed what little they could, with the hope of coming back to clear out the rest of their belongings. Unfortunately, some thieves had the same idea…
