Lawsuit by more than 1,000 women against Chesapeake Regional comes to court

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A lawsuit by 1,040 plaintiffs against the authority connected to Chesapeake Regional Medical Center had its first hearing Wednesday in Circuit Court.

The plaintiffs allege the hospital was grossly negligent in granting operating privileges to OBGYN Javaid Perwaiz. He was convicted on federal charges of defrauding Medicare and Medicaid for performing decades of illegal and unnecessary hysterectomies and other invasive procedures.

Perwaiz was convicted on 52 federal charges, with 38 charges connected to procedures he performed at CRMC. The New York-based attorneys for the plaintiffs say CRMC and its enabling body, Chesapeake Hospital Authority, knew that Perwaiz had a history of improper procedures at Maryview Hospital in Portsmouth before they granted him privileges in Chesapeake.
