Communities push back on proposal that could lead to possible seabed mining off the coast of Virginia

NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A proposal for commercial leasing off the coast of Virginia is stirring up a lot of conversation up and down the coast.

The future of the 2,700-square-mile area off Virginia’s Eastern Shore that’s also just 10 miles north of Virginia Beach has been a concern among many coastal communities recently.

That’s because a controversial proposal has been made that many say can open the door to seafloor mining there.
