Gas line rupture forces evacuation in downtown Suffolk

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A construction crew struck a natural gas line in the 300 block of West Washington St. Wednesday afternoon, prompting the evacuation of nearby structures, according to City of Suffolk officials.

Suffolk Fire & Rescue (SFR), Suffolk Police and Suffolk Public Works responded to the gas leak at 1 p.m. When emergency crews arrived on scene five minutes later, they immediately began evacuating the area, including nearby homes and a library.

A repair crew from Virginia Natural Gas (VNG) responded to fix the broken line.

West Washington St. was shut down from Wellons Street to Saratoga Street and all of South Street and Lee Street were also closed until the scene was cleared, which officials said happened just after 3 p.m…
