SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Calling mail service in Suffolk “in a state of crisis,” Rep. Jen Kiggans is urging immediate reforms at its main post office following an interim report detailing serious operational issues there, which included thousands of pieces of delayed mail, among other issues.
Those other issues, as highlighted in the U.S. Postal Service’s Office of Inspector General interim audit report, included hazardous working conditions, poor oversight over daily operations and improperly scanned packages. The audit included an in-person visit Feb. 10-12.
About a year ago, some residents in the city said they had gone two weeks without receiving mail, and in response, the postal service said at the time that “there have been some recent unforeseen employee availability issues at that office. When possible, we implement contingency plans, such as bringing in employees from nearby offices and staggering routes. We expect delivery to return to normal very soon, and we will continue to monitor delivery in the area.”
