A 21-year-old man is recovering in good condition after a late-night drive-by shooting in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood, where his ordinary Saturday drive turned into a barrage of gunfire.
Police said the man was behind the wheel of a black sedan when a dark-colored SUV pulled up alongside him, and someone inside opened fire, hitting him in the arm and chest. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in good condition.
Shot While Driving on South Racine
The attack unfolded around 10:39 p.m. in the 4500 block of South Racine Avenue, according to FOX 32 Chicago. The SUV sped off after the shots were fired, and no other injuries were reported.
Area One detectives are leading the investigation while officers work the neighborhood, looking for witnesses and any surveillance footage that might show the SUV or the shooter. The Chicago Police Department provided the account to local reporters.
Holiday Weekend Violence
This Back of the Yards shooting was one of at least 22 incidents in which people were wounded across the city over the Memorial Day weekend, according to CBS Chicago. The wave of holiday gunfire stretched emergency rooms and investigators as citywide roundups detailed victims of varying ages and multiple shootings that sent people to hospitals on the South and West sides.
Pattern of Drive-By Violence
The neighborhood has already been on edge. Back of the Yards has seen multiple multi-victim and drive-by shootings in recent weeks.
