Plastic Posts Installed To Block Drivers Using Elston Bike Lane To Skirt Traffic

GOOSE ISLAND — In an apparent response to complaints about drivers using a bike lane to bypass traffic backups near Goose Island, the city has installed plastic posts along part of the route in an attempt to prevent the reckless behavior.

Earlier this month, Block Club reported on the “nightmare” traffic jams and related issues on Division Street and Elston Avenue near and on Goose Island, stemming in part from the nearby closure of the Halsted Street viaduct and Chicago Avenue bridge for an ongoing rehab project.

Besides lengthy traffic backups on both streets during the morning and afternoon rush hours, some neighbors were also concerned about drivers using a wide, partially-protected bike lane on Elston Avenue to skirt traffic and turn onto Division Street…
