Couple dies in Northwest Indiana from carbon monoxide poisoning during power outages; officials warn of generator dangers

PORTAGE, Ind. (WGN) — Two people died after carbon monoxide from a portable generator filled their camper during last week’s widespread power outages, prompting Portage officials to remind residents how dangerous generators can be when used incorrectly.

The victims were identified as 68-year-old Salvatore Fogu and 65-year-old Deborah Fogu, both of Palos Hills, Illinois. The couple died from carbon monoxide poisoning on June 13 at Lakeshore Camp Resort in Portage.

It comes as communities across Northwest Indiana continue recovering from severe storms that swept through the region last week.
