A verbal argument at 31st Street Beach exploded into a violent brawl Friday afternoon, leaving two off-duty Chicago police officers and two other victims injured and sending more than 15 marked squad cars, an ambulance, and a fire engine racing to the South Side shoreline. Four people, two men and two women, were taken into custody as police continued investigating what led to the chaos.
The fight broke out around 4:05 p.m. in the 3100 block of South Lake Shore Drive, according to ABC7 Chicago, which reported that a verbal dispute between the victims and four offenders escalated into a physical altercation. Among those hurt were a 23-year-old off-duty officer and a 24-year-old off-duty officer, a 24-year-old woman, both of whom had announced they were law enforcement and tried to de-escalate the situation before it turned physical. The two other victims were men both age 22.
The 23-year-old off-duty officer suffered cuts to his face and nose and was taken to a hospital in what police described as good condition, per the outlet’s reporting. The three other injured victims sustained various cuts and other injuries but refused medical attention at the scene, the station reported.
