Chicago man gets 30-year prison sentence for armed carjacking in DuPage County

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A 21-year-old Chicago man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for an armed carjacking in the western suburbs in 2019.

A jury last year found Martavious Robinson guilty of one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking, a Class X felony, and a judge on Tuesday handed down the decades-long sentence, prosecutors said.

Robinson was the masked gunman who entered a Downers Grove garage on Nov. 30, 2019 and ordered a mother and her daughter out of their vehicle before driving off with it, officials said.

Robinson has been in custody since December 2019 and allegedly was involved in a series of suburban carjackings with two other men. The two accomplices pleaded guilty to armed vehicular carjacking, and both were sentenced to 40 years in prison, prosecutors said.

“Violent crimes such as these have an incredibly crippling effect on not just the immediate victims, but the entire community as well leaving entire neighborhoods fearful for their personal safety,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release. “The thirty-year sentence imposed today, and the forty-year sentences imposed on Mr. Robinson’s co-defendants, sends a loud and clear message.”
