Watseka Dad Accused of Killing His Newborn Son Jace

Authorities in Iroquois County have charged 22-year-old Watseka resident Jason L. Ruiz with first-degree murder and aggravated battery after his three-week-old son, Jace, was found not breathing at a rural home and later died at a Chicago hospital, officials said Thursday.

According to ABC7 Chicago, first responders were called on April 10 to a residence in the 1600-block of North Blue Bell Bend Road in rural Watseka, where they found the infant not breathing. The child was transported to Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and died there on April 13, the station reported. Ruiz was taken into custody in Chicago on Thursday and charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery.

What authorities say

The Iroquois County Sheriff’s Office is releasing few details about the case so far. “No other information was available,” the office told ABC7 Chicago, and officials have not made public a possible motive, booking status or court date. Investigators have not identified any other persons of interest, according to the station’s report.
