Chute street named in honor of ‘Mr. Mac’

Part of Oakton Street in front of Chute Middle School is now officially named in honor of former Principal Jim “Mr. Mac” McHolland, as he and other Chute community members gathered Saturday in front of the school to unveil a new honorary sign at the intersection of Oakton Street and Wesley Avenue.

McHolland headed Chute for 26 years until his retirement at the end of the 2024-25 school year, when he was succeeded by then-Assistant Principal Ann Riemenschneider. He received a number of accolades on his way out, including the Buddy Portugal Award from the Justin Wynn Fund, a Community Service Award from the Chessmen Club of the North Shore and an Outstanding Educator Award from Scouting America.

Speaking to the Chute community members in attendance, McHolland thanked the school’s staff for their work and support over his tenure, crediting them for the recognitions he had received. “I know that what happens with the teachers every day is what makes Chute the great place that it is,” he said…
