UP and NS tally merger impact on rival railroads’ traffic

WASHINGTON — Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern’s revised merger application contains substantial changes to the amount of traffic they expect to capture from other railroads.

UP and NS say their combined system will divert a combined 1.535 million net rail and highway loads to their transcontinental railroad, which is just a 1% increase from the projections included in their initial merger filing in December 2025.
