Kroger loses billions in customer spending to Walmart, Amazon and Costco, report finds

CINCINNATI (WKRC) – Kroger customers are becoming increasingly careful about what they buy as the Cincinnati-based grocery giant faces growing competition and a shift in billions of dollars of consumer spending to rivals.

Kroger and its banners lost more than $12 billion in consumer packaged goods spending to Amazon, Walmart and Costco over the past year, according to a recent analysis by consumer intelligence company Numerator.

At Kroger stores specifically, spending fell by $715 million as shoppers made 9 million fewer trips compared with the previous year. Ralphs, another Kroger banner, saw spending decline by $516 million and 5.5 million fewer trips…
