Tampa Bay veteran needs urgent medical care after 2 strokes

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. (WFLA) — A Pinellas County veteran needs urgent medical care after having two strokes.

Anthony Green’s wife is now turning to 8 On Your Side, saying the VA isn’t providing the help he needs to recover.

“On the 24th of this month, it’ll be 31 years that we were married,” said Constance Greene, Anthony’s wife.

Greene said her husband was planning a vow renewal, but last month, the unimaginable happened.

“He had a stroke on Aug. 7,” said Greene.

Greene called 911. Anthony was taken to HCA Florida Northside Hospital where he had a second stoke overnight.

“He ended up a vegetable,” she said. “He’s completely paralyzed on the right side, and he’s nonverbal. He’s saying one word all the time sure.”

Anthony is a veteran who served in the Army. Greene said the VA approved him for three weeks for in-patient rehab.

“They said that they were discharging him to me, and of course, I panicked because I’m going to be 67 years old, and I’ve got a lot of health problems,” Greene said.

Greene said her husband was dropped off at home without the VA prescribing his medications. Every day since, he’s regressed.

“I just need all the help I can get with him,” Greene said. “I just want him alive, and I’m not sure if this is loving because he can’t tell me.”

A public affairs officer with Bay Pines VA Healthcare System shared this statement: “Our staff are working to verify whether this Veteran receives care from Bay Pines VA and, if the Veteran is enrolled in our healthcare system, a member of our team will reach out to the family to discuss the treatment options that are available.”
