Elderly couple says pre-paid plots at Tampa cemetery no longer theirs

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — An elderly couple said the burial plots they paid for at a Tampa cemetery nearly 20 years ago are no longer theirs.

They said they were recently told that someone else is already buried there, and they won’t get a refund.

Sue and James Artiga have several relatives buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Tampa. In 2006, the couple purchased two plots beside James’ parents’ gravesite.

Since then, they’ve moved away from Tampa and decided to change plans. They found a buyer and hoped to use the money for new final arrangements, but when they tried to transfer ownership, they said they were notified of a major problem: someone is already buried in those plots…
