‘Did everything they could’: Police identify suspect in weekend incident that injured 5 officers, involved gunfire exchange

CLEVELAND (WJW) — The Cleveland Division of Police spoke to the media Friday afternoon, offering an update on a shooting that took place over the weekend involving a police chase, five officers getting injured, an officer firing their weapon and one suspect taken into custody.

Police identified the suspect Friday as 24-year-old Brian Branch, who is charged with multiple counts of felonious assault. There are additional charges pending.

The incident, which involved many moving parts, began when officers responded Saturday afternoon to the 5200 block of Fleet Avenue for reports a man had been shot several times.

Police soon learned that a driver seemingly circling the area was potentially the suspect involved in the shooting. He reportedly fired at the officers, with one officer sustaining injuries believed to be from shrapnel during the shooting, police said.

The suspect was then found driving near Track Road and Martin Avenue, but he refused to pull over and a pursuit ensued. Police said the suspect shot at officers during this time, and there was damage to a windshield…
