ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (WJW) — Mayflies have emerged!

A Fox 8 viewer captured pictures and videos of hundreds of mayflies coating a building and the sidewalk in Rocky River this week.

According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, mayflies will emerge after spending months living underwater. They only live for about a day, and their one goal is to reproduce.

“While their massive summer hatches can seem overwhelming, these insects play an important role in the Great Lakes ecosystem. Mayflies are a favorite food source for fish like walleye, bass, and trout, helping support healthy fishing throughout the region,” ODNR said in a recent Facebook post.
