Tracking: Wildfire smoke will make Northeast Ohio’s air quality hazardous

CLEVELAND (WJW) – Wildfire smoke is once again moving in from Canada this week, impacting the air quality across Northeast Ohio.

“Winds are turning from out of the west to out of the north, providing an expressway to the wildfire smoke to swing across Northeast Ohio,” FOX 8 Meteorologist Dontae Jones said.

Since the smoke is higher up in the atmosphere, the air quality is moderate Wednesday evening (115 ppm).

“On Thursday when we get a huge plume of wildfire smoke thanks to the wind direction and air reaching the surface behind a cold front, our air quality will turn hazardous,” Jones said.

The National Weather Service issued an Air Quality Alert, which will be in effect for the entire state of Ohio until midnight Thursday night.

Anyone with breathing problems should avoid going outside, and some people may consider wearing a mask outdoors on Thursday, Jones said…
