Joe Flacco: “It Sucks Being a Backup Quarterback”

Joe Flacco: “I think I was able to show I can still play, and we’ll see what happens this offseason. For the last 3 years, I’ve been a backup, obviously with aspirations to play at some point, and I’ve played some games here and there. Once you’ve played in this league and once you’ve played football in general, all of us want to play football. So you’re never going to be satisfied with sitting around and working hard and not really ever getting an opportunity. That’s not just me, that’s everybody in the league. Everybody from the outside looks at backup quarterbacks and thinks that’s a pretty good job. You get to make a couple million dollars a year and sit on the bench. It’s not a good job, man, it sucks. It’s miserable. You want to be playing. You get nervous before a game. When you play and you’re the guy, well you know you’re the guy, and once the ball is snapped, you go out there and have fun, you’re just in the moment. When you’re the backup, you’re literally on the sideline every single play still dealing with pregame nerves, and you never get rid of them. It’s not fun.”
