On March 29, 1975, Cleveland mob leader Alex Shondor Birns was killed when a C-4 car bomb exploded beneath his 1975 Lincoln Continental behind Christy’s Tavern in Cleveland, Ohio. Birns, once called Cleveland’s No. 1 racketeer by the Associated Press, had a long criminal record but often escaped conviction. He was suspected to have been killed by former protégé Danny Greene, though Greene was never charged. Greene himself died in a similar car bombing in 1977.
