Little Italy weighs new tax assessment to keep extra police patrols

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – A Cleveland neighborhood is trying to figure out how to keep extra police patrols before a current arrangement could expire.

The proposal would add an assessment to some property tax bills through a Special Improvement District, or SID, in Little Italy.

Why the neighborhood is debating a SID

Mayfield Road in Little Italy is one of Cleveland’s busiest strips, packed with restaurants and visitors. For the last several years, the neighborhood has had a boosted police presence, including patrols from the University Circle Police Department.

“We’re just trying to maintain the level of policing. University Circle Police Department has been patrolling up here now for over 5 years,” said Raymond Kristosik, director of the Little Italy Redevelopment Corporation…
