7th annual Pearl DeVere bed races in Cripple Creek

(CRIPPLE CREEK) – The 7th Annual Pearl DeVere Day Bed Races recently took place on Myers Avenue in Cripple Creek, where participants raced beds to honor Pearl DeVere. The event brings to life a piece of Colorado’s history competitively and engagingly.

The bed races featured eight teams, each composed of three people: two “Johns” and one “Pearl.” Competitors strategized to move their beds down the street, celebrating the legacy of Pearl DeVere, who is known as Cripple Creek’s most famous madam for her elegance and the money she charged.

Pearl DeVere built the Old Homestead house in the 1800s, which now operates as a museum. This event aims to keep the “wild energy” of Pearl and the parlor girls alive and connect participants to the town’s past.

The rules of the race require the “Pearl” to remain in bed at all times. One “John” also stays in bed, while the other “John” pushes the bed. At the turning point, the pushing “Johns” switch roles to complete the race…
