Historic Helldivers gather for special flight in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — Three historic helldivers flew together today in a formation flight over Colorado Springs.

The flight, which took place Thursday at the National Museum of WWII Aviation, brought together three fully restored, functional SB2C Helldivers. The planes came from Fagen Fighters WWII Museum, the Commemorative Air Force Houston Wing and Jim Slattery’s Helldiver.

The planes also flew with the museum’s B-25 “In The Mood” as a camera ship for the event. Though the flight was today, the museum says the aircraft will be on display until Aug. 21. The Commemorative Air Force Helldiver will be in Colorado and potentially offer flights next weekend.

According to the museum, the Helldiver is at the National Museum of WWII Aviation is known for its unique history of being abandoned by the U.S. Navy and dumped in Lake Washington in Seattle. The museum says the aircraft was later claimed by two teenage divers, that led to a dispute over ownership. A court battle eventually gave ownership to the founders…
