Mandatory evacuations still underway for one of 3 wildfires burning in southern Colorado

Containment of a fire that prompted mandatory evacuations while threatening close to 100 structures has increased in recent hours, per an update from the Custer County Sheriff’s Office.

Dubbed the Buttermilk fire, the blaze sparked on Wednesday in rugged terrain found west of Highway 69’s stretch between Hillside and Westcliffe. At last report, it had reached 80 acres in size, burning in brush and timber. Thankfully, a noon report on Thursday indicated that the fire’s containment had reached about 75 percent.

Per the recent report from the sheriff’s office, no structures have been lost and there have been no injuries related to the fire. Some homes reopened to inhabitants around noon on Thursday with about 15 remaining under mandatory evacuation at last report. Residents of those 15 homes have been able to briefly return to their homes under deputy escort to gather supplies and pets…
