FOUNTAIN, Colo. (KKTV) – Legislation introduced on Tuesday could give the Ray Nixon Power Plant a three-year extension to retire its coal-fired unit.
Current state law requires the coal unit to retire by the end of 2029. SB26-182 would allow that unit to operate through 2032, which Colorado Springs Utilities CEO Travas Deal said is important to replace the power currently generated by coal.
In a statement on Tuesday, Deal wrote that meeting the 2029 deadline would have “significant reliability and rate impacts.”…
