Increasing rain chances, cooler temperatures into early next week

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The stretch of hot weather is slowly coming to an end as a wetter and cooler pattern begins to settles in this weekend.

Saturday will remain hot, with highs in the mid-90s, but shower and thunderstorm coverage will become more widespread as a slow-moving cold front approaches from the north.

Sunday looks to be the wettest day of the weekend, with numerous showers and thunderstorms expected as the cold front arrives.

Any thunderstorm will have the potential for damaging wind gusts, pea or penny sized hail, heavy downpours, and frequent lightning.

Rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are likely across much of the Midlands, with locally higher amounts possible where storms repeatedly move over the same areas.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of South Carolina under a Level 1 of 5 Marginal Risk for severe storms through Sunday, with damaging wind gusts as the primary threat.

Heavy downpours and training thunderstorms over the next few days will also make for a flash flood threat this weekend…
