USC summer program helps SC teachers bring history and civics to life

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – About 40 South Carolina middle and high school social studies teachers are spending part of their summer out of the classroom — and on the road — to strengthen how they teach American history and civics ahead of the school year.

The University of South Carolina is hosting the educators for seminars on campus and immersive field excursions as part of a $2.2 million federal grant tied to America’s 250th anniversary. The program, titled “Our Founding Principles: Preparing Educators for America’s Semiquincentennial and Beyond,” is designed to deepen teachers’ understanding of founding documents, history and the civic process — and give them new strategies for teaching civics.

From July 13 through July 16, teachers are visiting key historical sites across the Midlands, including the Battle of Camden site and museum, the South Carolina State Museum, the Confederate Relic Room, and the Cayce Historical Museum, according to USC…
