COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – The Richland County Sheriff’s Department’s newest K-9 has a special job.
Ribeye officially joined the Richland County Sheriff’s Department in late June. He is the first and only bloodhound to join the department. However, Ribeye does not have the same job as other K-9 dogs on the team.
“The bloodhounds are used for tracking innocent people–missing people, elderly people, missing children,” handler Richard Jeffcoat said. “We get a lot of people with dementia that wander into the woods–the bloodhound is for that. Once he finds them in the middle of the woods, they don’t get bit. No risk of injury, he’ll just lick them.”
