COLUMBIA, S.C. — Law enforcement and fire crews are on the scene investigating potential explosives discovered by construction crews in Columbia on Friday morning.
Columbia Police Chief Melron Kelly said officers responded around 8:45 a.m. to the 4800 block of Fort Jackson Boulevard near I-77, where a construction crew reportedly found a very old ammo box. Authorities initially said the contents of the box were unknown, so an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team was called to the scene, along with other support teams.
However, in an update shared to social media, police said the items at the location included suspected “C4 materials,” a detonation cord, and blasting caps. Kelly explained that C4 is a highly explosive material used by the military and not available to the general public…
