Former USC quarterback shares cancer diagnosis, GoFundMe

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WSAV) — Former South Carolina Gamecock quarterback Stephen Garcia was diagnosed with Stage 4 colorectal cancer, Senior Associate Athletic Director Steve Fink shared Wednesday.

Garcia’s GoFundMe reported he will start chemotherapy on Wednesday. As of 6:30 p.m., four hours after the creation of the GoFundMe, Garcia had received over $53K of a $70K goal.

A message of prevention was shared on GoFundMe:

“Colorectal cancer is often silent in its early stages. We cannot stress enough how important it is to prioritize regular screenings and colonoscopies. These preventative measures are life-saving tools that can catch issues before they progress. If Stephen’s story can encourage even one person to schedule their screening, it adds a greater purpose to this difficult fight.”

Fans of South Carolina and the Southeastern Conference would likely remember Garcia’s play as the signal caller for the Gamecocks from 2008 to 2011…
