Convicted Pedophile Returns to Hometown Streets After Assault Sentence

Additional Coverage:

A convicted sex offender, Michael King, has returned to his hometown of Boyle in County Roscommon, Ireland, following his release from prison. King, 55, a former car salesman, served time for a series of sexual assaults committed against Tara Kelly, his wife’s goddaughter, when she was just 16 years old.

The offenses occurred in 2004 and 2005, at a time when the age of consent in Ireland was 17. In May 2023, King was sentenced to six and a half years in prison, with one year suspended, resulting in a 5.5-year actual term. His sentence was later reduced by the Court of Appeal after his defense argued against consecutive sentencing for related offenses against a single victim.

Since his release, King has been spotted multiple times in Boyle, causing distress among community members. Local residents expressed shock and dismay over his return, emphasizing the lasting impact of his actions on the victim and the community. One local remarked on the lack of remorse shown by King and praised Tara Kelly for her courage in coming forward and encouraging other survivors to speak out.

During his trial, King faced 12 charges ranging from inappropriate touching to oral sex. The case drew significant attention, especially after letters of support, including one from his wife and a purported employer reference, were submitted on his behalf. His former employer later denied any knowledge of the reference letter, and King controversially wore his dealership uniform during the proceedings.

King is among several sex offenders released recently and remains under the supervision of the Gardaí, Ireland’s national police force, as he reintegrates into the community. Tara Kelly has publicly urged other victims to come forward, stressing the importance of accountability and support for survivors.
