COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL)— Wednesday, the Columbus man accused of killing another in a Valentine’s Day shooting appeared in Recorder’s Court.
Kentarius Cooper, now 19, is accused of shooting and killing Gary Brown, 27, behind a Dollar General on Amber Drive nearly two years ago.
Brown was found by police on Feb. 14, 2022, suffering a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional where he died two days later.
Probable cause for Cooper’s arrest warrant was not obtained until Jan. 4 of this year, Cooper was arrested Jan. 12 and charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
Det. Edenfield with the Columbus Police Department testified video surveillance made Cooper a prime suspect.
“Mr. Cooper walked to the front of the store. He walked past the victim down towards the end of the strip mall, turned around, ran back up to the victim, walked back down the sidewalk with the victim to the back of the store,” Det. Edenfield said. “Within 30 seconds, standing in the back of the store, the victim runs into the camera view, and he is shot in the back of the head. The other cameras in the area show no other persons behind that store besides the four black males that were identified on the video store and the victim to the back.”
