South Georgia drought expands slightly; rain expected this weekend

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — The latest drought update is out. Locally, we have an EXPANSION of the EXTREME drought in Meriwether County. The EXCEPTIONAL drought across South GA has only expanded slightly. This is the FIRST time since the Drought Monitor was introduced (2000) that the entire state of Georgia was in a severe drought or above.

Since the start of the drought in October, Columbus has seen only 15.96 inches of rain… nearly 20 inches below average, but our deficit stretches all the way back to June.

The Weekend: Friday is on track to have two round of rain, and some could be widespread. The good news: we aren’t looking at any severe weather…
