COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The Ohio Department of Public Safety has announced the threat of dangerous new substances that are showing up in Ohio’s drug supply. The risk has prompted the Ohio Narcotics Intelligence Center to issue two public safety bulletins warning of increased overdose risks and potentially fatal consequences on Friday.
The first bulletin focuses on orphine analogs, described as a sub-group of new synthetic opioids. NSOs are synthetic drugs that mimic the effects of controlled opioids such as morphine and fentanyl. The substances are extremely potent and can disrupt breathing and impact the central nervous system. Officials have encountered orphine analogs in seized drug samples and suspected overdose incidents across Ohio.
The second bulletin warns about the synthetic veterinary sedatives medetomidine and xylazine. The substances are not approved for use in humans. The bulletin warns that veterinary sedatives cause sedation and can induce life-threatening effects. These are said to be widespread in Ohio’s drug supply…
